Minu Punto Argento, Prosecco, Extra Dry, Italy NV
Prosecco is the name of both the white grape variety and the sparkling wine made from it that come out of the Veneto region of Italy. Flavors of pear and caramel with a characteristic slightly bitter finish converge in this medium-dry wine; ‘extra dry’ wines are slightly sweeter than brut wines. This soft bubbly is the ideal sparkler for brunch or as an apéritif.

Les Jamelles Chardonnay, Vin de Pays d’Oc, Languedoc, France 2006
This is the second Les Jamelles wine we have used in the club this year, because this producer offers such a fantastic value. The diverse microclimates and soil types in the large Vin de Pays d’Oc allow this winery to make many different types of wine well. Their Burgundian-styled Chardonnay is aged on the lees and 30% of the wine ages in barriques, providing a creamy mouthfeel and a bit of toasty oak flavor. Ripe apple, baking spice, and lemon round out this medium-bodied wine, which is enjoyable on its own or with a variety of fish dishes.

Teira Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County 2006
Longtime winemaker Daniel Donahoe and vineyard manager Alexis Woods founded Teira winery and named it after their daughters Thea and Keira. Most of their limited production wines come from their estate Dry Creek vineyards, though this Sauvignon Blanc includes other sourced Sonoma fruit. Wine & Spirits Magazine named this a best buy in their "Top 100 Values of the Year," and we agree that this light, crisp, refreshing wine is a great value. Full of citrus fruits, grapefruit, lemon and lime that would pair great with island spiced shellfish dishes.

Masciarelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Tuscany, Italy 2005
Montepulciano, not to be confused with the town in Tuscany, is a vigorous, deep-colored and well-ripened red grape that is the most widely planted in Abruzzo. It creates wines of excellent value here and in the Marches, just to the north. Gianni Masciarelli, who passed on July 31st earlier this year, has been tagged as masterminding the revival of winemaking in Abruzzo. Along with vast vineyards, the estate includes olive groves and farms. This 2005 bottling is rich and lively with flavors and aromas of fresh red fruits and provides gentle tannins. The juiciness of the wine makes it immediately enjoyable and a great companion to pizza; the hint of funkiness makes it a good match for sausages and spicy stews.

Moulin de Gassac Guilhem, Languedoc, France 2007
An entry-level wine from Mas de Daumas Gassac, whose owner Aimé Guibert is famous for his appearance in Mondovino, the Guilhem is very rustic on the nose, with notes of roast coffee, cheese, and a metallic undertone. Rustic on the palate as well, it is one of those rare red wines (especially from the south of France) that leads with acid, not tannin. A nicely structured blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignane and Cinsault that is framed by ample acidity and crisp raspberry fruit, the Moulin de Gassac captures the essence of vin de table, making it a great bistro wine at lunch.

Masia D Bielsa Old Vine Garnacha, 2007
Just southeast of Rioja in north central Spain is Campo de Borja, where Grenache (Garnacha in Spanish) is the star of the show. Grenache appears to have originated either in Spain or Sardinia, but whatever the origins it is the world’s second most widely planted variety, and a veritable workhorse across Spain and southern France. Rich plum and blackberry flavors come through cleanly on this unoaked wine. Medium to full bodied with a cracked black pepper finish, this is a classic grilled red meat wine.
